Mass Layoffs Up, but Claims Fall in September

The number of mass layoffs — where 50 or more workers are laid off from a single workplace — increased by 49 to 1,316 in September from August, according to seasonally adjusted data released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Initial claims for unemployment insurance caused by mass layoff events fell by 4,992 in September for a total of 122,462.

“Temporary help services” was the industry with the most initial claims due to mass layoff events in September with 6,131 initial claims, according to numbers that were not seasonally adjusted. “Motion picture and video production” was second with 3,647 initial claims in September.
