Mass Layoffs Edge Up in June

The number of mass layoffs — where 50 or more workers are laid off from a single workplace — fell by 63 to 1,317 in June from May, according to seasonally adjusted data released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. And initial claims for unemployment insurance caused by mass layoff events rose by 1,215 in June from May for a total of 131,406.

“School and employee bus transportation” was the industry with the most initial claims due to mass layoff events in June 24,038 initial claims, according to numbers that were not seasonally adjusted. “Food service contractors” was second with 14,417 initial claims in June.
