Mass Layoffs Decrease in August

The number of mass layoffs — where 50 or more workers are laid off from a single workplace — decreased by 73 to 1,267 in August from July, according to seasonally adjusted data released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Initial claims for unemployment insurance caused by mass layoff events decreased by 9,966 in August for a total of 127,454.

 “Temporary help services” was the industry with the most initial claims due to mass layoff events in August with 8,257 initial claims, according to numbers that were not seasonally adjusted. “School and employee bus transportation” was second with 6,975 initial claims in August.
