Maryland/DC region loses 2,180 manufacturing jobs over year, report finds

August 11, 2014

The Maryland/Washington, D.C., area is one of only a few regions to report a decline in manufacturing jobs in the past year, according to Manufacturers’ News Inc. The region lost 2,180 manufacturing jobs from June 2013 to June 2014, a 1.1 percent decline.

Maryland/DC now counts 4,502 manufacturers employing 181,663 workers.

“Defense Department cuts and global competition have affected many manufacturing companies in Maryland/DC,” says Tom Dubin, president of the Evanston, Ill.-based publishing company, which has been surveying the industry since 1912. “However, given its educated labor pool and focus on research and development, the state remains an ideal location for advanced manufacturing initiatives.”
