Marketing execs, truck drivers top ‘hot jobs’ lists

November 21, 2014

Marketing executive tops a list of hot jobs for those with college degrees, according to an analysis from CareerBuilder and EMSI. The list features occupations for which the number of jobs companies post each month significantly outpaces the number of people hired. Truck driver, heavy and tractor-trailer, topped the list of occupations that don’t require a college degree.

“Job creation is gaining ground and job seekers are gaining leverage,” said CareerBuilder CEO Matt Ferguson. “For nearly 70 occupations in the US, the rate at which workers are being hired isn't keeping up with the frequency and volume of open positions being advertised. By drawing attention to talent deficits, our list underscores opportunities in everything from technology and healthcare to sales and transportation for job seekers looking to make a change.”

Occupations that require a college education that have the largest gap between average monthly unique job postings and average monthly hires include:

  1. Marketing executive: 22,996 gap
  2. Software developer, applications: 21,084 gap
  3. Registered nurse: 19,118 gap
  4. Industrial engineer: 18,151 gap
  5. Network and computer system administrator: 17,054 gap

Occupations not requiring a college education that have the largest gap between average monthly unique job postings and average monthly hires include:

  1. Truck driver, heavy and tractor-trailer: 110,498 gap
  2. Merchandise displayer and window trimmer: 14,682 gap
  3. Orderly: 5,208 gap
  4. Sales representative, wholesale and manufacturing: 3,745 gap
  5. Purchasing manager: 2,752 gap

The analysis pulled from more than 90 national and state employment resources. CareerBuilder and EMSI looked at the average number of people hired per month in more than 700 occupations from January 2013 to August 2014 and compared that to the number of job postings for each occupation aggregated from online job sites for the same period.
