Manufacturing index highest since 2004

Economic activity in the U.S. manufacturing sector increased in April at a faster rate than in March, according to the Institute for Supply Management's key purchasing managers index for manufacturing which reached its highest level in April since June 2004.

April's reading was 60.4, up from 59.6 in March, according to index numbers released today by the ISM. Readings of more than 50 indicate expansion.

The employment portion of the index rose to a reading of 58.5 in April from 55.1 in March.
