The U.S. manufacturing sector expanded in October at a faster rate than in September, according to the Institute for Supply Management's key purchasing managers' index for manufacturing released today. In addition, manufacturing employment expanded after 14 months of decline with to temporary workers being called back.

"The jump in the index was driven by production and employment, with both registering significant gains," said Norbert Ore, chair of the institute's manufacturing business survey committee. "Production appears to be benefiting from the continuing strength in new orders, while the improvement in employment is due to some callbacks and opportunities for temporary workers."

October's index reading was 55.7, up from 52.6 in September. Readings of more than 50 indicate expansion.

The employment portion of the index rose to 53.1 in October from 46.2 in September. It was the first expansion after 14 months of decline.
