Manpower survey finds employment to cool

June 10, 2008

U.S. employers project a slight decline in hiring in the third quarter, according to the employer outlook survey released by Manpower Inc. (NYSE: MAN).

The survey found that 26% of U.S. employers plan to increase their workforces during the third quarter and 10% plans to cut back for a net employment outlook of 16%. The net employment outlook was 17% for the second quarter and 22% for the third quarter of 2007.

"While overall softness continues in the third quarter, employers are generally not reacting with large-scale payroll reductions," said Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Joerres. "The gradual slowdown suggests that employers have become sophisticated at anticipating their hiring needs."

The report surveyed 14,000 U.S. employers.
