Manpower CEO: Don't squander opportunity

October 14, 2010

Manpower Inc. (NYSE: MAN) Chairman and CEO Jeff Joerres was slated during a keynote speech at the American Staffing Association's Staffing World 2010 conference today to caution the staffing industry that it must not squander its opportunity to shape the post-recession workforce.

"Our industry has a pivotal role to play as the global economy gathers pace because, as employers continue to hesitate to commit to permanent hires and talent mismatches become more acute, they will look increasingly to a full range of solutions that staffing companies offer," Joerres said in a prepared quote released today.

To take advantage of opportunities presented in the post-recession climate, the staffing industry must tackle its three biggest challenges, Joerres said. Those challenges include:

*Commoditization. Treating people as a commodity will mean staffing buyers won't get the value-added services they seek and job candidates will feel disgruntled.
*Complexity. Staffing buyers are no longer simply looking for emergency stop-gap measures to fill vacancies. "Contemporary clients are looking for a full suite of solutions to help them win, and trusted advisors who can provide expertise to help them navigate the changing world of work."
*Legislation. "Employment services and human resources companies must keep abreast of the latest employment legislation around the world in order to uphold the integrity of the industry and to ensure they act in accordance with the employment issues at hand."
