Malaysia – Government, not foreign workers, to pay contentious visa renewal fees

24 April 2015

A contentious fee of MYR 35 (USD 9.66) to be paid by foreign workers to a private company for the online renewal of worker permits will be scrapped from 2 May 2015, reports freemalaysiatoday.com

The Cabinet decided that the government would instead pay the cost from the MYR 125 (USD 34.49) levy it imposes on the worker’s employer.

MyEG, a private limited company that develops and implements E-Government Services., took over the Immigration Department’s over-the-counter services early this year.

Foreign workers, employers and employment agencies both in Malaysia and abroad, especially Indonesia, have objected to the initial additional cost of MYR 38 (USD 10.48), which following protests was reduced to MYR 35.

“This was unanimously endorsed (by Cabinet),” said Wee Ka Siong, a Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department.
