MBO Partners Makes Independent Work Predictions

December 27, 2012

MBO Partners, a provider of business services to independent contractors as well as independent contractor payrolling and compliance services for staffing buyers, predicted five trends in independent work it expects will help shape the U.S. business landscape in 2013. Those five trends are:

  • As more Americans turn to independent work, federal, state and local tax and labor agencies will seek to increase legislation, tax and oversight of independent work.
  • The number of firms with just one employee has steadily increased, growing from about 14 million in 1992 to nearly 22 million in 2010. Expect increased interest from economists and policy makers in the behaviors and motivations of solopreneurs and microbusinesses as a new job-creation engine.
  • Look for contingent talent management to take on a more strategic role in the boardroom and on the HR agenda.
  • A host of new industries will launch to support the independent worker with new products and services. For example, there will be more healthcare solutions designed to address the needs of the growing solo worker population in the wake of the Affordable Care Act.
  • The new “revolving door” career between independent work and traditional employment will become a career positive for both employers and workers. “Professionals will use the independent work path to change, extend and grow their careers,” said MBO Partners CEO Gene Zaino. “No longer will independent work be a black mark on the resume; instead, expect it to become a tool to fast-track a career.”
