Learning solutions firm to acquire SumTotal Systems

August 25, 2014

Skillsoft Corporation agreed to acquire SumTotal Systems LLC from affiliates of private equity firm Vista Equity Partners. The acquisition brings new offerings to Skillsoft, which provides cloud-based learning solutions, and expands its global reach.

SumTotal provides a human resources technology platform which includes learning, talent, workforce, payroll, expenses, analytics, mobile and social. In addition to standard services to implement its product, the firm also provides managed services packages — including staffing — to perform on-going system administration, report writing, and annual rollover support.

The transaction is expected to close by early October; terms were not disclosed. SumTotal will operate as a Skillsoft business unit and transition to the Skillsoft brand over time. However, the SumTotal product line will remain branded as SumTotal for the foreseeable future. SumTotal CEO Hardeep Gulati will lead the SumTotal business unit.

SumTotal has been partnering with Skillsoft since 2002 and the acquisition is a natural progression of this partnership, according to SumTotal.

"The integration of these complementary products — Skillsoft’s technology-delivered learning assets and SumTotal’s solutions for learning, talent and workforce management — will allow our customers to break new ground in implementing more comprehensive solutions for managing and expanding their workforce talent,” said Skillsoft CEO Chuck Moran.
