Leadership development opportunities in HR lacking, Korn Ferry survey finds

April 07, 2015

Leadership development opportunities for those in the human resources field are less than glowing, according to a survey released today by executive search firm Korn Ferry International Inc. (NYSE: KFY).

The survey found nearly half of executives, 47%, said their organizations do not offer leadership development programs specifically for members of the HR function. Of those that do offer programs to this group, 66% said the development is not as rigorous as it is for other functions within the organization, and 58% do not believe their senior HR leaders receive relevant development opportunities to perform optimally in their roles.

"This is the perennial problem of the cobblers’ children having no shoes," said Korn Ferry Senior Client Partner Arvinder Dhesi. As the HR function continues to become more complex and entrenched in the strategic aspects of the business, it is critical that HR leaders are offered key development opportunities to help them succeed.

The survey also found 48% of respondents said members of the HR function are not considered for high-potential programs and 58% said there is no succession plan for the CHRO.

The March 2015 survey included more than 700 executives.
