Law Grads Face Tough Jobs Outlook

June 11, 2012

The employment rate for law school graduates is 85.6 percent for the class of 2011, the lowest rate since 1994, according to the employment report and salary survey released last week by the National Association for Law Placement. The rate has dropped each year since 2008.

In addition, only 65.4 percent of law school graduates who were employed had jobs that required passage of a state bar. It was the lowest percentage NALP has ever measured.

While 49.5 percent of employed grads had jobs in private practice, 18.1 percent were employed in business. Of that 18.1 percent, 11 percent of grads worked through staffing firms.

The survey measures the employment rate for law school grads nine months after a typical May graduation. The employment rate had reached a high of 91.9 percent in 2007.
