Las Vegas posts highest jobless rate

Las Vegas posted the highest jobless rate in May, 14.1%, among U.S. metropolitan areas with populations of 1 million or more, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

The Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario area in Southern California recorded the second-highest rate in May at 13.9%. It was followed by Detroit at 13.7%.

The Washington DC metropolitan area registered the lowest jobless rate in May among large metropolitan areas at 6.0%. Minneapolis posted the second-lowest at 6.4% and Oklahoma City ranked third at 6.5%.

Among metropolitan areas of all sizes, El Centro CA posted the highest unemployment rate at 27.5%. Of the 13 areas with jobless rates of at least 15.0% in May, 11 were in California.

Bismarck ND recorded the lowest jobless rate among all metropolitan areas in May at 3.1%.
