Las Vegas keeps highest jobless rate

Las Vegas' unemployment rate of 14.5% in June was the highest among U.S. metropolitan areas with populations of 1 million or more, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. It was the second month in a row Las Vegas posted the highest jobless rate.

The Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario area in Southern California posted the second-highest rate in June at 14.4%. The Detroit area registered the third-highest at 14.3%.

The Washington DC metropolitan area recorded the lowest jobless rate in June among large metropolitan areas at 6.4%. Next came the Oklahoma City area at 6.7% and the Minneapolis area at 6.8%.

Among metropolitan areas of all sizes, El Centro CA posted the highest jobless rate at 27.6%. Of the 12 areas with jobless rates of at least 15.0%, 10 were in California.

The Bismarck ND areas posted the lowest jobless rate among areas of all sizes in June at 3.8%.
