July job openings fall by 55,000

The number of job openings fell 55,000 in July to 4.2 million on the last business day of the month, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. However, the job openings rate was 3.0% in July, unchanged from June. The rate has been 2.9% or 3.0% for the last seven months, according to the BLS.

The job openings rate was highest in professional and business services and in accommodations and food services at 4.0% each.

The hires rate rose to 3.5% in July from 3.4% in June, according to the BLS. There were more than 4.8 million hires in July, compared with 4.7 million in June.

Separations fell 64,000 to almost 4.5 million in July. The separations rate was 3.2% in July, down from 3.3% from June.
