Judge won't temporarily halt Arizona law

December 24, 2007
A federal judge on Friday denied temporary restraining orders to postpone the implementation on Jan. 1 of a new Arizona law aimed at getting tough on employers who hire illegal immigrants. The law, HB 2779, would require all employers in that state to use the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's E-Verify program. Businesses found hiring illegal workers could also lose their business licenses.

Business groups and immigrant organizations sued to stop implementation of the law, saying it is unconstitutional. The judge on Dec. 7 dismissed a lawsuit by the groups against Arizona's governor and attorney general, saying they were the wrong people to sue. The groups then filed a new lawsuit against Arizona's 15 county attorneys.
