Judge to decide on letting Arizona law take effect

December 19, 2007
A federal judge plans to rule by the end of the week on whether Arizona's employer sanctions law will go into effect Jan. 1, the Arizona Republic newspaper reported. The law targets illegal workers by getting tough on employers. It would require employers to use the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's E-Verify program and employers found hiring illegal workers could lose their business licenses.

Business groups, including the Arizona Contractors Association Inc. and the Arizona Chamber of Commerce, are suing the state's county attorneys in an effort to stop the law saying it is unconstitutional. Both sides in the lawsuit had appeared in federal court on Tuesday.
