Jobless claims rise by 12,000

U.S. initial claims for unemployment insurance rose to 500,000 in the week ended Aug. 14 -- an increase of 12,000, or 2.5%, from the previous week, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the U.S. Department of Labor.

Also, the number of initial claims for the previous week ended Aug. 7 was revised up by 4,000 from the previous report to 484,000.

The four-week moving average of claims for the week ended Aug. 14 rose by 8,000, or 1.7%, to 482,500 from the previous week's revised average of 474,500.
