Jobless claims rise by 12,000

The number of U.S. initial claims for unemployment insurance filed in the week ended Sept. 18 rose by 12,000 from the previous week, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the U.S. Department of Labor.

Initial claims for the week ended Sept. 18 totaled 465,000, up 2.7% from the previous week's number of 453,000 -- which had been revised up by 3,000.

The four-week moving average of claims for the week ended Sept. 18 fell to 463,250, down 3,250, or 0.7%, from the previous week's revised average of 466,500.
