Jobless claims rise, but weekly average falls

The number of U.S. initial claims for unemployment benefits rose 1.2% to 652,000 in the week ended March 21 from the previous week's revised number of 644,000, the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. The four-week moving average of claims, however, fell 0.2% to 649,000 from the previous week's revised average of 650,000.
