Jobless claims jump by 19,000

U.S. initial claims for unemployment insurance rose by 19,000, or 4.1%, to 479,000 in the week ended July 31, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the U.S. Department of Labor.

MarketWatch reported economists expected claims to fall to 453,000.

The four-week moving average of claims for the week rose by 5,250, or 1.2% to 458,500.

Jobless claims for the previous week, ended July 24, were revised up by 3,000 to 460,000. That week jobless claims fell by 8,000.
