August 07, 2008

In the week ended Aug. 2, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims was 455,000, the U.S. Department of Labor reported. The four-week moving average was 419,500, an increase of 26,750, or 6.8%, from the previous week's revised average of 392,750.

However, the Department of Labor has just begun a program to locate those eligible for jobless benefits, and it's unknown how much that program is impacting the numbers, The Associated Press reported.
