Jobless claims fall by 3,000

U.S. initial claims for unemployment insurance for the week ended June 5 fell by 3,000, or 0.7%, to 456,000 from the previous week, the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. The decline was smaller than expected. MarketWatch reported economists had expected claims to be 445,000 for the week ended June 5.

The number of initial claims for unemployment insurance from the week ended May 29 was revised to 459,000, up 6,000 from the previously reported number of 453,000.

The four-week moving average of claims for the week ended June 5 rose by 2,500, or 0.5%, to 463,000 from the previous week's revised average of 460,500.
