Jobless claims drop by 27,000

U.S. initial claims for unemployment insurance fell by 27,000 to 451,000 in the week ended Sept. 4, a decline of 5.7% from the previous week, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the U.S. Department of Labor.

The number of initial claims for the previous week -- ended Aug. 28 -- was revised up by 6,000 to 478,000.

The four-week moving average of claims for the week ended Sept. 4 fell by 9,250, or 1.9%, to 477,750 from the previous week's revised average of 487,000.
