Jobless claims average rises; total claims at three-month high

November 26, 2014

The US four-week moving average of initial claims for unemployment insurance last week rose by 6,250 to a total of 294,000 from the previous week’s upwardly revised average of 287,750, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the US Department of Labor.

The four-week moving average decreases the volatility of the weekly numbers. Total initial claims for unemployment insurance for the week ended Nov. 22 rose by 21,000 to a total of 313,000 from the previous week’s upwardly revised figure of 292,000.

Bloomberg reports claims are the highest since early September and a possible sign the pace of improvement in the labor market has cooled.

No special factors impacted this week’s initial claims, according to the Department of Labor.
