Jobless claims average rises by 1,750

November 20, 2014

The US four-week moving average of initial claims for unemployment insurance last week rose by 1,750 to a total of 287,500 from the previous week’s upwardly revised average of 285,750, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the US Department of Labor.

The four-week moving average decreases the volatility of the weekly numbers. Total initial claims for unemployment insurance for the week ended Nov. 15 fell by 2,000 to a total of 291,000 from the previous week’s upwardly revised figure of 293,000.

Bloomberg reports it was the 10th straight week the number of claims has been lower than 300,000, something that hasn’t happened since 2000.

No special factors impacted this week’s initial claims, according to the Department of Labor.
