Jobless claims average rises 0.5%

The four-week moving average of seasonally adjusted initial jobless claims rose 0.5% to 543,750 in the week ended Dec. 13 from the previous week's revised average of 541,000, the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. In addition, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims for the week ended Dec. 13 (not the four-week average) fell 3.7% to 554,000. Initial claims represent those people filing for unemployment benefits.
