Jobless claims average falls by 3,750

January 23, 2014

The U.S. four-week moving average of initial claims for unemployment insurance fell by 3,750 in the week ended Jan. 18 to 331,500 from the previous week’s revised figure of 335,250, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the U.S. Department of Labor.

The four-week moving average decreases the volatility of the weekly numbers. Total initial claims for unemployment insurance for the week rose by 1,000 to a total of 326,000 from the previous week’s revised figure of 325,000.

MarketWatch reports the new claims figure appears to offer more proof that the labor market has not softened as much as the government’s employment report in December suggested. To read the story, click here.
