Jobless claims average down 3,500; total claims up 5,000

The U.S. four-week moving average of initial claims for unemployment insurance fell by 3,500 in the week ended March 15 to 327,000 from the previous week’s unrevised figure of 330,500, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the U.S. Department of Labor.

The four-week moving average decreases the volatility of the weekly numbers. Total initial claims for unemployment insurance for the week rose by 5,000 to a total of 320,000 from the previous week’s unrevised figure of 315,000.

MarketWatch reports the average is at the lowest level since end of November.
