Jobless Claims Move Higher

The four-week moving average of initial claims for unemployment insurance rose 1.3 percent in the week ended Jan. 8 after falling in the two previous weeks. Total jobless claims jumped 8.5 percent.

In its report today, the U.S. Department of Labor announced the four-week moving average of jobless claims rose to 416,500 in the week ended Jan. 8 from the previous week's revised number of 411,000.

Total jobless claims rose to 445,000 in the week ended Jan. 8 from 410,000 (the revised number for the previous week), according to the report. Total claims had fallen below the 400,000 level just two weeks ago.
