Job openings relatively flat

The number of job openings in August was little changed from July, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The job openings rate — a measure of job openings compared with total employment — edged up only 0.1 percent.

The number of hires fell 0.2 percent from July to about 4.5 million, and the number of separations rose 2.4 percent to approximately 2.4 million.
