Job openings, hires, separations fall

U.S. job openings, hires and separations all fell in March on a year-over-year basis, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

Job openings fell by 33.3% year-over-year in March to 2.7 million. The job openings rate fell to 2.0% from 2.9% in the same period last year.

The number of hires fell 14.3% to approximately 4.2 million in March from almost 4.9 million in March 2008. The hires rate fell to 3.1% from 3.5%.

Separations fell 5.6% year-over-year to 4.7 million. The separations rate was unchanged at 3.6%.
