Job openings fall year over year in July

U.S. job openings fell 38.9% year over year in July to approximately 2.4 million, according to numbers released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The job openings rate fell to 1.8% in July from 2.8% in July 2008.

The number of hires fell 13.9% in July year over year to approximately 4.1 million. The hires rate slipped to 3.1% from 3.4%.

Separations fell 11.5% year over year in July to approximately 4.3 million, and the separations rate fell to 3.3% from 3.5%. Separations include voluntary losses of jobs as well as voluntary departures from jobs such as quits and retirements.
