Job board reports openings up 41% over year

U.S. job openings rose by 6.2 percent in April and year-over-year job openings increased 40.9 percent, according to Simply Hired’s May 2013 Employment Outlook released today.

“Job openings increased in every major metro in April, marking the tenth time in 12 months the U.S. has seen an increase in job growth,” said James Beriker, president and CEO of Simply Hired. “We are seeing job listings increase in nearly all industries, as well as significant improvements in job competition across the country. As we move into summer, these are great signs for the economy and continued job momentum.”

Greenville, S.C.; Portland, Ore.; Grand Rapids, Mich.; and Albuquerque, N.M., experienced the largest gains at 9.2 percent, 9.0 percent, 8.4 percent and 8.3 percent respectively.

Job openings increased in 16 out of 18 industries in April. Legal showed the largest gain at 13.6 percent, rebounding from a 28.7 percent decrease in March. Financial services followed with a 13.2 percent gain in April. Only two industries saw decreases during April: Agriculture, down 8.9 percent, and government, down 1.7 percent.
