January ‘mixed bag’ for US online job ads

January 31, 2013

“January was a mixed bag for labor demand with gains in some states offsetting losses in others,” said June Shelp, vice president at The Conference Board.

U.S. online job ads rose by 106,900 in January for a total of more than 5.0 million, according to The Conference Board’s report on online jobs ads released today. January’s increase was smaller than the rise of 217,900 in December.

About two-thirds of the states posted gains in January while one-third were down.

About half of the 22 major occupational groups were up in January. Food preparation and serving-related occupations, along with transportation and material moving, posted the most impressive increases while traditional office occupations — business and finance, computer and math, and office and administrative support — declined.
