Initial jobless claims rise 5.9%

The number of U.S. initial jobless claims rose 5.9% in the week ended Jan. 31, the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. The four-week moving average of claims increased 7.2%.

There were 626,000 initial claims for unemployment filed, up from the previous week's revised figure of 591,000.

In addition, the four-week moving average rose to 582,250 from the previous week's revised average of 543,250.
