Industrial is top field for Canadians without university degrees

June 27, 2014

Industrial is by far the hottest field for workers in Canada without university degrees, according to a survey by Express Employment Professionals. Ninety-five percent of participants included industrial in their response to the survey. Sales/marketing and office services also garnered significant responses.

“When looking for a job, you can’t just think about the jobs you want; you have to know the jobs that are available. The job search can be much more productive if you’re looking in the right places,” said Bob Funk, CEO of Express, and a former chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.

“If I were giving advice to someone looking for work, especially a non-university graduate, I would tell them to go where the jobs are,” Funk said. “This list is also valuable information for students looking to pursue a technical education because it's a good idea to acquire the skills that are most in demand.”

Respondents were asked to name the five hottest fields hiring the most non-university graduates. Results included:

  1. Industrial: 95 percent
  2. Sales, marketing: 84 percent
  3. Office services: 79 percent
  4. Technical: 47 percent
  5. Engineering/manufacturing: 37 percent
  6. Information technology: 26 percent
  7. Home help: 21 percent
  8. Human resources: 21 percent
  9. Accounting financial: 21 percent
  10. Healthcare: 5 percent
  11. Licensed medical: 5 percent

The findings come from a 2014 survey of 22 Express franchises in Canada.
