India - Recruitment drive for Indian Railways backfires

25 November 2015

An Indian Railways recruitment drive for disabled staff has ended abruptly after candidates had no lifts or ramps to get to the top floor where the drive was held.

Indian Railways had set up the recruitment event in a bid to create a more inclusive workforce and set up the test centres in the top floors of a building with some candidates having to drag themselves up the stairs or be carried by others.

The Times of India newspaper quoted one candidate as saying "Many candidates could not reach the exam centre."

The Ministry of Indian Railways issued an apology on the company’s twitter page stating that “Indian Railways apologises for discomfort caused to any candidates”.
