India – Festive hiring to create thousands of temporary jobs

22 October 2014

The fourth quarter of the year is expected to produce up to 450,000 temporary jobs as a result of rising demand from various sectors, as business try to cope with the upcoming festive season, reports The Hans India

India’s hiring landscape has improved over the past few months following a revival in business sentiments and the onset of the festival season. While India celebrates festivals throughout the year, the last few months are busier, starting with Dasara, which celebrates the victory of good over evil, which was celebrated earlier this month, followed by the festival of lights (Diwali), Christmas, and New Year.

Suchita Dutta, Executive Director of the Indian Staffing Federation, commented: “The hiring is anticipated to be up by +5% to +15% during the festive season. The job generation in Q3 is likely to be [between 300,000 to 450,000] with majority demand from e-commerce, hospitality and retail industry.”

During the festive season, there are huge sales across all industries and, in order to cater to the increased footfall of customers, there is need for additional manpower, according to Sudeep Sen, Assistant Vice President of staffing firm TeamLease Services.

"Conservatively speaking, in the retail sector only, keeping in mind the organised and compliant wage payers, minimum of 25,000 jobs are created across metro[politan] and cosmo[politan] cities," Mr Sen added.
