An index of small businesses by Intuit Inc. found they added 40,000 new jobs in April. In addition, the index found average monthly pay for all small business employees rose by 0.11 percent to $2,680 in April, slightly more than the March revised estimate of $2,677 a month.

The index also found small business hourly employees worked an average of 107.3 hours in April, down from the revised figure of 107.4 hours in March.

The index is based on aggregate and anonymous online employment data from approximately 70,000 businesses with fewer than 20 employees that use Intuit Online Payroll.
