Index - IT worker confidence slips

January 14, 2009

Information technology workers' confidence fell in the fourth quarter, according to the IT employee confidence index released by Technisource, a division of Spherion Corp. (NYSE: SFN). The gauge fell seven points in the fourth quarter to a reading of 40.4. Readings above 50 indicate a positive confidence level.

The index's survey found that 76% of technology workers believe the economy is getting weaker, up 12 percentage points from the third quarter.

In addition, it found 76% of technology workers believe fewer jobs are available. That's up 17 percentage points from the third quarter.

"Many industries are under intense scrutiny for cost-cutting," said Technisource President Michael Winwood. "While times are tough, we are advising our clients to seize opportunities to make changes that improve productivity. Whether through consolidation of multiple systems or platforms, outsourcing, cutting back on perks and traveling, looking at labor and capitol tradeoffs, or utilizing contractors versus permanent employees, reducing costs doesn't have to mean reducing capabilities."
