IT jobs’ turbo-charged growth cools in November

December 12, 2013

The number of U.S information technology jobs rose by 0.07 percent in November, but the turbo-charged pace of growth has decelerated, according to the TechServe Alliance’s index of IT jobs.

“While IT employment has grown for 27 consecutive months with 23 of those months being successive all-time highs, the rate of growth has continued to decelerate over the past year,” TechServe Alliance CEO Mark Roberts said in a press release.

“While consistent employment growth month-over-month is to be applauded at any level, the forces that earlier in the year turbo-charged the growth rate in IT appear to have abated,” Roberts said. “With the New Year approaching and a federal budget deal on the horizon, I am hopeful we can return to a more robust rate of job growth in 2014.”

There were approximately 4.5 million IT jobs in the U.S. in November, up 0.07 percent from October and up 5.17 percent on a year-over-year basis.

In addition, the TechServe Alliance also tracks engineering employment, which rose by 0.15 percent in November to 2.47 million jobs. The year-over-year growth rate for engineering jobs was 1.51 percent.

Roberts said there was modest growth in engineering jobs over 2013.

The TechServe Alliance is a national trade association of the IT and engineering staffing and solutions industry.
