IT Confidence Slips, Still Third of Firms to Hire

July 18, 2011

About a third of information technology firms still plan to hire in the third quarter, but they are less confident now than they were in the second quarter, according to the IT industry business confidence index published by CompTIA. The index fell two points during the third quarter to a reading of 52.9, but it still remained in positive territory.

“The tech sector is doing well for the most part, as demand remains relatively strong for IT hardware, software and services,” said Tim Herbert, vice president, research, at CompTIA.

The index’s survey found that 34 percent of IT companies intend to increase staff over the next six months and 38 percent said they intend to maintain staff at current levels. Medium-sized IT firms are the most likely to hire new staff.

The index’s survey took place in late June and July, and a total of 449 IT companies participated. CompTIA is an organization that represents the IT industry.
