Economic activity in the manufacturing sector expanded at a slightly faster rate in October than September, according to the purchasing managers index for manufacturing released today by Institute for Supply Management. The index rose to a reading of 51.7 in October from a reading of 51.5 in September. Readings above 50 indicate growth.

The employment portion of the index dropped to a reading of 52.1 in October from 54.7 in September.
