Hurricanes add 45,000 to jobless claims

The advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims was 497,000, the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. The effects of hurricanes Gustav and Ike added approximately 45,000 claims, according to the department.

The four-week moving average of initial jobless claims was 474,000, an increase of 11,500, or 2.5%, from the previous week's revised average of 462,500.
