Hiring expectations slip

Hiring expectations for September are down in both the manufacturing and service sectors compared with a year ago, according to the leading indicators of national employment (LINE) report from the Society for Human Resource Management and Rutgers University.

The report's survey found that 39.4% of manufacturers plan to add staff in September while 15.3% intend to decrease staff for a net increase of 24.1%. That's down from the projected net increase of 31.4% at this time last year.

In the service sector, employers projected a net employment increase of 31.3%, down from 44.2% a year ago.
