Higher education jobs edge up in Q3

November 26, 2014

The number of jobs in higher education edged up in the third quarter, reversing a downward trend that lasted four consecutive quarters, according to the higher education employment report from job search site HigherEdJobs. The number of jobs in higher education rose 0.2 percent compared to the same period a year ago, adding about 3,200 jobs, the report found.

Four-year colleges and universities gained 5,800 jobs, or 0.4 percent; however, community colleges lost 2,600 jobs, or 3.7 percent of their workforce.

Although the trend for part-time job postings for both faculty and non-faculty positions outpaced full-time job postings, third-quarter increases were moderate, indicating a possible stabilization of employment levels and practices throughout higher education institutions, according to the report.

Compared to last year, institutions continued to slightly shift their hiring towards administrative and executive positions over faculty positions, though the actual numbers of postings for both types of positions were up.

The West region outperformed all other regions for higher education job postings, increasing 26.1 percent, due largely to a 41.5 percent increase in job postings in its Mountain region. The South rose by 19.4 percent, followed by the Midwest at 11.7 percent and the Northeast at 4.7 percent.

The report analyzes job-posting data from roughly 850 colleges and universities that have continuously subscribed to the company’s unlimited posting plan for four years, as well as data from US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
