Average U.S. healthcare premiums rose 6.0% in 2009 for employers, consistent with 2008, and are projected to rise by 6.0%, according to an analysis by Hewitt Associates, a Lincolnshire IL-based human resources consulting and outsourcing firm.

The average total healthcare premium per employee for large companies will rise to $9,120 in 2010 from $8,607 in 2009. Employees will be asked to contribute toward 23% of this cost.

Hewitt's data on health plans comes from a database of more than 1,700 health plans throughout the U.S. including 325 employers representing more than 13 million health plan participants.
